Tom Humber, owner of Humber Custom Carpentry Ltd., has a wide range of experience in the construction industry. At the age of 23, he left Calgary where he had started his apprenticeship and moved to the Yukon. There Tom homesteaded twenty-five miles from the nearest road giving him a crash course in self reliance and problem solving as well as catapulting him into a career in log and timber house building. He created and operated Heartwood Log Builders for a number of years leaving a legacy of log homes/structures in towns and remote sites around the Yukon. He also did historical restoration work on a North West Mounted Police post on the Yukon River and the sternwheeler 'Tutshi '. During this time he completed his Red Seal Carpenter ticket and honed his carpentry skills further with a six-month stint at the North West School of Wooden Boat Building, Port Townsend, Washington. His fascination with boats, particularly wooden boats, helped Tom decide to relocate with his family to the Cowichan Valley after 17 yrs. in the Yukon in search of a longer sailing season.
Humber Custom Carpentry Ltd now operates primarily in the Cowichan Valley, focusing mainly on renovations. HCC Ltd. is a General Contractor, working on both large and small projects, from whole house renos to small additions. We have a solid relationship with a wide network of quality subcontractors to guarantee the successful completion of all projects we take on.
At the moment we are in the middle of renovating a hundred year old farmhouse to create a restaurant (Amuse Bistro) on the main floor and a suite upstairs. It is proving to be a complex project requiring an extensive seismic upgrade and involving around 20 separate trades over several months. This job followed on the heels of the building a timber Tasting Room for Unsworth Vineyards, a new winery in Cobble Hill.
